What you need to know about the Monocle Racing Series

The goal of the Monocle Motorcycle Racing Series is to put the fun back into competitive racing, keeping it simple with minimal rules, whilst still racing in a safe environment. The motorcycle-only racing series is founded on the idea of catering for every kind of racer in an affordable manner. In this sense, the Series welcomes all riders, no matter their age, skill level, type of motorcycle or preference of tyres.

Furthermore, riders do not have to sign up to a club or association to race in the series. All that is required to enter the Series is an active medical aid that covers racing, or MSA insurance cover.

Monocle Motorcycle Racing Series in 2020

For 2020, we have partnered with Motorsport South Africa (MSA) and are now MSA Affiliated, making it easier for riders with MSA insurance cover to enter our race days.

Riders will not be required to pay additional fees or buy an MSA license for this convenience, as the costs will be absorbed by the Monocle Motorcycle Racing Series via the flat R1 500 entrance fee per event.

In 2020, the Series will host two races at Red Star Raceway, two races at Phakisa Freeway (Welkom), two races at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, as well as one race in East London and one race in Port Elizabeth.

RACING CALENDAR

A racing series that is for the riders, by the riders and one that has no shackles or ridiculous rules that have to be followed – or else”.

EIGHT ROUNDS OF RACING

The series currently has eight rounds of racing throughout the year at various racetracks around the country. Riders simply pay an affordable flat fee per round of racing – no matter which track is being raced – allowing riders entrance to the Friday (free practice day) and the Saturday races.

ENTRANCE FEE IS RIDER-BASED

Importantly, the entrance fee is rider-based, rather than bike- or race-based. This means that a rider pays an entrance fee of R1 500 for the whole weekend and can choose to enter as many categories or classes of races as they want – provided they meet the requirements for each class.

EIGHT CLASSES TO CHOOSE FROM

On race days, there are eight classes for riders to choose from:

  • Street-bike – for inexperienced riders without race experience on standard road bikes
  • SuperSport 300
  • 600cc Class
  • 1000cc Unlimited – open to all riders with a minimum of 1000cc
  • Classics – for Formula 1 bikes from 1984 to 1989 and Formula 2 bikes from 1975 to 1983
  • Masters – for riders older than 40 years of age on any make of motorcycle
  • BOTTS – for motorcycles with V twin engines or V4 engines
  • HMG and DOCSA – for riders of historic and Ducati bikes to participate in a parade session
